Divine Cities and Villages Mega Update 2020

Are you ready? We’re at the finishing line, all that’s left is to create a video so people stop asking me what textures DC has. I keep telling them none but they keep arguing and saying they love the textures. Guess they enjoy vanilla? Anyway- read on!


Introduction – A Note from Tarsh

You will need a new game for this update – unfortunately, there was no way around it with specific features that needed fixing. This update includes the winners of September’s Charity Drive which benefitted orphans. Thank you very much for your donations. Each month a new charity is selected so we can make more corners of the world shine brighter.

A few words before we begin. It would behove you to read this because it’s a big update but there is no reason to get overwhelmed. For about a year I’ve toyed with the idea of having a bakery, speciality shops and more NPCs along the road. But the one thing that’s held me back has been the fact the XBox 1-X is a terrible machine for mod using. There are workarounds to help ease the problem of the X and I have included a number of the under the hood performance fixes. These fixes include fixing some of the broken levelled NPC spawn points (People all know the wolf havoc was broken by Bethesda and recently updated which has reduced crashing by a good amount). SU users will not notice a difference in the NPCs that spawn (my spawns, obviously not Bethesda’s), don’t worry. I gotchu covered. My testers thus far have mentioned that they feel they can finally live in Whiterun without it exploding on them. Nothing has made me as happy as that. 

Please read the checkpoints for the updates, additions and changes. Please remember to place your mods back in order when updating. Increase of size with Divine Cities is due to facegen needed- if we didn’t need facegen the size of mods could be a lot smaller… alas, that is not how it goes and we are required to provide facegen. 

NEW Features —

[ ] Offering Boxes – Temples around Skyrim will gladly take your extra Septims to feed the needy and clothe the poor.

[ ] Cloud and Linked Storage– Both DC and DC/V now has cloud and linked storage. Inside every home will be specially marked containers that are linked to another cell- that means less loading for you. Each container will have [Cloud] or [Linked] marked; Linked means the storage you are placing items into will be drawn at the location’s crafting furniture and is also in the cloud and items marked Cloud is non-linked Cloud storage. 

Please remember- when you go to a crafting station you’re going to have a list of items drawn to your person so it is a good idea to only store the reagents you want to wait for drawing to you. The other option is to use the cloud storage. You have a choice, so please utilise that.

[ ] Storage Options In order to reduce the impact of pulling items out of storage there are now separate Clothing, Lt Armour, Hvy Armour and Weapon storages. Food, Soul Gems and Alchemy are also set to their own chests and there are general dressers/storage/wardrobes for everything else. End Tables and Children’s chests are unaffected since 1. you shouldn’t be storing anything in their chests and ruining the adoption system and 2. if you’re storing 500 maces in an end table, that’s on you, not me 

[ ] Cooking and Alchemy – Linked crafting stations are now more dynamic- Shared flora and berries for Alchemy and Cooking are now on their own list. Modded items will not be part of the list due to limitations with how the retrieval system works to ensure you don’t glitch out. 

YOU are responsible for not rushing the auto-linked storage. You must wait for the “done” message before spamming another container or station. 

[ ] Coffee and Tea

Players will now be able to make their own coffee and tea. Purchase the teapot or coffee percolator from Hannestre to take with you. All you need are some coffee beans or tea leaves and water. Simply talk to any innkeeper around Skyrim for drinking water (via chat window) or Way Station merchants (via the normal chest) and pull up your coffee percolator or teapot via your armour menu and voila! Now you can be toasty warm anywhere you are.

NEW Faces!–

[ ] Dogs and Cats and Pets Oh My! – There are several named dogs and cats you can pick up as non-combat companions. They will happily follow you. Note: you should only have 1 non-combat pet at a time. I’m not going to explain why, you know why. You will also find city and village dogs about the world. There are only so many idle markers I can fit into a home and I had to do some tricky work in the CK for bear idles- please be careful packing too many in a house.

– Bróghir the Bear – Near Riverwood this soft-hearted bear was abandoned when his warden tamer passed away. He quietly forages for food across the river.

– Reece the Dog – She pads softly around the paths in Falkreath, her owner frail and  unable to care for her. The townsfolk feed her scraps but she would be perfect for a budding family.

– Elric the Kitty – Elric has been a fixture in Markarth for a few months now and no one knows where he came from. He’s very friendly and enjoys tuna treats.

 – Miska the Husky – Miska was trained to fight bears, horkers and other antagonistic creatures of the frigid north. Her current owner took an arrow to the knee and needs to find her a new owner- you can find her inside the Dark Alley in Windhelm

– Princess the Snowy Sabre Cat – A highly trained hunter of vermin, Princess finds herself without a home. She’s been roaming the snowy lands near Brandy-Mug and would make an excellent foot warmer at night

– Odr the Husky – Odr’s original family set sail from Dawnstar to Solitude, unable to bring their husky companion with them. They are hoping he finds a good home soon.

– Winston the Husky Pup – Winston’s litter mates have all been adopted and he’s looking for the right person to take him on adventures and teach him how to Husky. You can find him in Winterhold

– Thoth-  a black wolf pup whose pack was decimated by hunters. His mam hid him in a burrow and he was rescued by the owner of the Traitor’s Post Way Station and is in need of a home.

– Silgi – the little red wolf is a curious wolf who decided she would rather live with humans than with her pack. Old Man Bennington has taken her until he can find the perfect owner for her.

– Bacchus – is an adorable fawn coloured kitty who enjoys basking in the sun in Whiterun, however, he has also been a mild nuisance with his late night singing. The Grey-Manes are hoping someone will take him in so he has the attention he deserves

[ ] Horses – There are several abandoned horses around the holds who are in need of a caretaker. Feel free to manage them or ignore them

[ ] Birbs – There are now “seagulls” by the docks of the port towns to go with the seagull sound files Bethesda put in. I’ve also created seagull feathers to go with them and there are also ravens to go with the raven sound files along with raven feathers. Ravens are peppered in the world where I have edits already

NPCs and Vendors —

[ ] Old Man Kinsington is now Old Man Bennington and has custom voice acting. Thank you OMB! (he’s the co-author of IFF and also the mod author that let’s you snuggle your sweetheart in bed).

[ ]  Stritchgor the Mighty – an Orc Merchant that features billy clubs for fighting and proper armour for defending. He’s also known to carry arrows for the archer and food stuffs for the hungry traveler. Traveling around the Reach you will find him traveling from or two the Kolskeggr Way Station Inspired by SkipperStitch

[ ] Khardok Ulfbrand – a Nord replenishing merchant that will sell you food, bits of leather and items to help with fletching, skins, pelts and warm coats to stave off the Skyrim chilly nights. He happily patrols all over Whiterun Hold and stops often at the Western Tree Way Station or Eldergleam Way Station.  Inspired by Kharnivor

[ ] Rikki Hliatto – Nord Follower. He specialises in both two handed and sword and board techniques. After Maven forced his family to relocate he decided to head off into the world to earn riches by way of his arm. Boasting of leading mammoth parties, Rikki is an able body follower. You will find him at the Honeycomb Way Station. Inspired by Sideways8

[ ] Rose on the Ridge – a woman of sharp wit and smart beauty, Rose has a lovely magic on the border of Eastmarch/Riften, north of Merryfair farm where she sells an assortment of magical items and new enchantments to learn. Inspired by RoseofRita

[ ] Mad Miracle Max – Max has spent his life in Winterhold learning how to live on very little. It is within his shoppe that he has perfected some of the best miracle cures known to Skyrim. His poultices can make the worst cough calm and his elixirs are known to calm the nervous of nellies. Inspired by MaxMax

[ ] Arya Tir’nae is a Breton arcane warrior who left Cyrodil to find new ways to channel magic. While no one would confuse the Nords as being magic-centric, there are still secrets to uncover in the world. Magic Follower who wears her own special heavy armour that allows her to conjure special familiars and freeze enemies in place. Find her hanging around Miracle Max pestering him for more magic books. Inspired by WolfSaphire

 [ ] Nixeleth and Sileveth – Bosmeri sisters who are hell bent on having fun. While their family have been more or less stuck in Skyrim since the fall of the factions, these girls aren’t above finding beauty in the bleak. Both are able archers with Nixeleth also adept at dual wielding and Sileveth has dipped her hands into ward magic. You can find them prowling about Riften. Inspired by Nixeleth

[ ] Travelers on the road – you will find people traveling to and fro on the roads outside of the aforementioned merchants. These are men, women and sometimes their children, who are looking for a new life somewhere else or visiting family. Roads feel a lot more traveled on!  Inspired by Keldir Zketraa

NEW Locations! – 

[ ] Hannestre’s Bakery is OPEN! You will be able to buy special delights located in Solitude. The Bakery features Hannestre selling 

  • -Jazbay Macaroons – loved by the mages, this delightfully airy macaroon has magicka restorative properties.
  • -Candied Apples – a beloved treat during the Witche’s Festival, this hearty concoction has endurance restorative properties.
  • -Sugar Cookie – a full flavoured treat perfect with tea or coffee, this biscuit fortifies one’s health and can put a smile on the most dour of faces
  • -Citrus Sponge Cake – with seasonal fruit nestled in an cocoon of cream and love, this delicious cake has health regenerative properties.

You will also find Hannestre’s sister as patrons around the bakery and his wife will be selling his confections. I have long wanted a bakery in DC and with Hannestre being a winner of our charity drive twice over I decided to make his passion part of DC. 

[ ] Solitude Wharf District: The road leading up to Solitude finally has an ocean city feeling with the outskirts being dotted by men and women earning a living by fishing and crabbing the rich ocean waters. They also have a trade agreement with the north so it won’t be difficult to find horker tusks and they are very skilled at harvesting salmon eggs. You may also purchase a humble abode for five thousand septims. But please, stay out of the back alley… 

[ ]Way Stations – There are new Way Stations across Skyrim. They are small areas that allow you to rest up and you’ll find various people wandering to and from them to other locations. Waystations are built with exterior kits so there is no navmesh changes this means no load doors and better compatibility.

– Haaflinger – south of Forth Hraggstad is Hraggstad Way Station

– The Reach – West of Kolskeggr Mine is the Reachwind Way Station

-Whiterun – West of the Western Watch tower and south of Sleeping Tree Camp is the Western Tree  Way Station. 

– Eastmarch – Traitor’s Post has been cleared out and rebuilt. The bandits were a bit cranky but found themselves a little camp further down. You’re free to dispatch them and loot their lootings

-The Rift –  Between Honeystrand Cave and Sarethi farm you’ll find the Honeycomb Way Station

The Pale- South of Dawnstar you’ll find the Red Road Way station, a place to warm up before continuing your trek north to the frigid port town

[ ] Outlaw Refuges – Inspired by ESO, each hold now has an outlaw refuge to hunker down, sell your stolen items and clear bounties. Some of the Refuges have crafting stations while some don’t have the funds for them. They will sell you a “Fine Linen Suit” which is a copy of Sheogorath’s outfit (the inventory model by Bethesda was never updated so it looks like fine clothes for some reason) and Outlaw’s Regalia which is comparable to the Nightingale Set but isn’t more or less OP- just different. They also carry the East Empire Necklace because maybe you could snek on one of their boats and pilfer a few things…

Please remember you cannot be in pursuit by a guard, or in view of a witness when you want to clear your bounty. Get out of combat and then use the pardon edict. You will be notified if you are in combat.

– Falkreath – Behind the inn at the well, this refuge was born of an ancient nordic crypt and cleared out to service the needs of those who live outside the law.

– The Pale/Dawnstar – On the left side of Silus’s House – influenced by the pirate life, the Dawnstar Outlaw Refuge is built of various materials found all over Skyrim and set up inside an abandoned mine.

-The Reach/ Markarth – The path to the mines behind the waterfall lead to a  refuge was built into the cavern of an ancient Dwemer ruin.

– Hjaalmarch/Morthal – Behind the Blacksmith at the well, the ancient ruins of an imperial dungeon has been repurposed. While we can’t say Morihaus ever walked these stone walls neither can anyone prove he didn’t.

-The Rift/ Riften – Next to the mausoleum and submerged in the lake you’ll find a humble safehouse where you can safely fence your items and rest your head.

– Whiterun – Behind the Bannered Mare at the well it connects to forgotten escape route and shelter system that probably housed dozens of soldiers. It has been updated to reflect Whiterun pride.

– Winterhold – At the well behind the houses, in front of the blacksmith, it is created from a former section of the Winterhold College. 

–  Eastmarch/Windhelm – Next to the smelter where the sewer cap is you’ll creep into the waterways of one of the original mansions in Windhelm long sunk into the ground and refitted by the Outlaws.

[ ] Haafingar/ Solitude – The well next to Erikur’s you’ll find you’re in a forgotten part of the Blue Palace underground system. It is comfortable and cozy but keep an eye on your coin purse.

[ ] Hold Temples 

It would be wrong of me to neglect something that’s been nagging me for the last couple of years and that’s a lack of a temple in Morthal, Winterhold and Dawnstar. I realise they aren’t “big” holds, but they are still hold capitols and people still want places to congregate. There is now a Temple of Julianos in Winterhold, Resolution of Zenithar in Morthal and a Temple of Akatosh in Dawnstar. You will see townsfolk listening to sermons along with priests that speak the sermons and you can cleanse yourself of what ails you. Especially if Matt gave you rockjoint.

NEW Homes! —

[ ] Autumngale of Riften

This player home serves to bridge the gap between Shadowlock, Hidden Springs and Honeyside. Located at the front of Riften this spacious home costs 50,000 septims and features room for four children, a pet and places to store your items. I wanted something inside Riften that would serve as a spot to adopt children and if you want 6 children and even more room, Villages features Whispering Pines located on the docks.

NOTE: The “Hidden Grotto” has been removed. I never much liked it and it’s far too cramped and not what I want from a hidden space under Riften. I prefer having Shadowlock and Autumngale as more realistic choices for Riften, not to mention Villages has The Frozen Lady which is by far a prettier ship.

[ ] Pineview Cottage of Falkreath

Located outside the Falkreath lumber mill, this home is a transplant from Whiterun. The story goes that a very disgruntled trader dismantled his house in Whiterun and rebuilt it outside Falkreath. Unfortunately it ruined his finances and now he needs to sell it. Congratulations! For only 50,000 septims it can be yours. Features two children’s beds, weapon racks, a room for house staff/followers and all crafting stations. And yes, I took the insides of Breezehome and plopped it in Falkreath. F I T E me.

NEW Items! 

[ ] Hold Your Candles – you can now walk around with a candle instead of a torch. Find them in various homes or from merchants. Please note there’s an engine bug with torches/candles that can make it seem as though there is a double flame, simply ready/unsheath your weapon and it will update the flicker node and be fine. 

[ ] Specialty Books – (all 100% lore confirmed) are now available via the Winterhold Book Shop in restored Winterhold. This includes all of Vivec’s Sermons but remember that those sermons are rare so check back often!

[ ]  Flavour Items Worth Selling – Items such as “Torchbug Hair Tonic” might be found in the world and are safely sold to vendors. They will be marked with an asterisk next to their name. And yes, they are lore friendly. Stop asking, stop worrying. The only thing not lore friendly or immersive is you using mods since mods literally change the base game. Stop being pedantic and have some fun.

NEW Experiences!

[ ] Laundry Lines! That’s right- the Nords clean their britches. You will notice laundry lines peppered around Skyrim and most homes have the option of doing laundry. Go up to the empty line and activate it to hang your drawers. Now that’s clean!

Performance Fixes/Bugsmooshing/Updates

[ ] Due to the release of SFO/IFF and the ability to change follower outfits most followers have outfits attached. As most of you know followers with given outfits could get stuck in them and not wear what you want them to which is why they were naked. And since most of you are amazing at reading and knew this weren’t freaked out but thankful. 

But now the few people who don’t read patch notes and information will feel a lot better about dressed NPCs and stop filling up my mailbox with letters of the, and I quote, “naked bug.” Bugs don’t need clothing you know.

[ ] DC created NPCs are now more in line with DPOS and randomising the outfits given to them. This creates a more diverse and dynamic NPC integration into Skyrim. Please note that while most citizens can have their pockets picked, some cannot. I try very hard to balance performance with features and I didn’t want a bunch of items cluttering up your data.

[ ] Special foods added by DC (bbq ribs, baked goods, etc) now properly restore Survival hunger costs and/or fortify warmth and remove cold factors. Please note that we don’t have access to the sleep system so coffee won’t remove fatigue.

[ ] Windhelm’s Dunmeri Pub, The Dark Alley, has been moved down a few doors to blend in better to the landscape. It also has a room to rent if you’re that hard up for a spot to sleep in Windhelm. 

[ ] Many homes now have activators in the house to display items- for instant Murkfrost Gardens has spots for the insects in jars and Windcreek has activators for the rare necklaces you can find. Happy Hunting!

[ ] Many homes are now decorated with baked goods 

[ ] Whiterun’s “graveyard” area has been updated to reveal who is being remembered. Because there’s a hall of the dead I decided to remove the gravestones that peppered into the neighboring yards- there’s really no reason for it. Instead you will find a memorial plaque along the HoD outside walls

[ ] Whiterun Power has been renamed to City Options to be more clear about what it does while in the menu. Trees now come disabled at the start to help X users ease through the doorways during their Whiterun Loop. Birds in Whiterun are now disabled by default and tied to the NPC option.

[ ] Markarth’s Blacksmith area has been updated to allow for fetching of stored linked crafting items

[ ] Homes are now more interactive with added goodies to be found

[ ] Calbridge Estate has been revamped to make it feel like it’s actually three stories. A beautiful new entry way has been set up with a den/library/workshop downstairs. 

[ ] Windcreek Cottage in Whiterun has a nicer foyer and a laundry room in the hallway towards the kids/garden room. The Magician’s Tower has now been fitted with Whiterun stone textures to blend in better. Furthermore you can display your claws, amulets, masks and four rare artifact weapons. The Workshop Upgrade System has been updated and refined.

[ ] Whiterun Crafting – you can now pull your stored items at the mini-station on the wooden platform where Adrienne works, along with the forge and smelter. The improvement stations under her awning are hers alone.

[ ] Snowleaf Cottage in Dawnstar got a facelift. There’s a little shed outside with linked crafting storage and a laundry line. The enchanter desk inside has been placed into the main bedroom with the enable button to swap to a generic storage unit.

[ ] More children’s beds now have updated sit markers for the parents so they can read to their children before bedtime

[  ] More gravestone markers to remember the fallen

[ ] Lighting Templates have been further adjusted so that other lighting mods (including mine) cannot interfere with the intended look. Some places were reported as having a “gloomy” look due to those changes. Fog begone!

[ ] Updated DC vendor inventories for a more varied selection including unique and randomly named items (this is for an upcoming deco addon and to add flavour to the game).


[ ] Adjustments made to player homes for better children’s toys, visible liquid in cups when sitting/eating, updated wardrobes and containers

[ ] Warm Cloth and Leather Clothing now has a hooded option so you don’t look like a deranged Santa.

[ ] Lyngwi Cottage is now 7,500 Septims 


— New Names – npc names have been updated to reflect the integration of COTA into Skyrim. Outfits adjusted. 

Bakery now sells Sweet Dreams Bakery goods- Hannestre was kind enough to share his recipe book

— New Recipes – Has a jewelcrafting station with a brand new circlet for females in twenty- four styles with a light armour variant for a total of fourty-eight styles. There are also lore friend septum piercings Unfortunately Khajiit and Argonian races cannot be included with these models because Bethesda doesn’t like it when we try to make adjustments for them. 

Weling has a new helper, Walkora, who hails from House Hlaalu to show off new jewelry styles and teach others how to craft these ornate items. You can find her in the shop from 8-6.

Intricate and Delicate circlets are female only. I haven’t found a male model I like and tbh none of the men I’ve talked to have been particularly interested in circlets so I’m setting that aside for now. The pinna rings take up slot 43 and 44 so you can wear just one or both at the same time and the nose ring takes up slot 48 which means you can still wear circlets and hoods with them.

You may also craft the Dawnguard style amulets and rings along with the base game circlets. The Jeweler in COTA is open from 8 am until 6 pm. Purchase the Jewelcrafting Manual from Walkora and the options will open up on the jewelry station (which is a repurposed armour tempering table). Crafting jewelry gives small increments of smithing leveling up.

— Updated NPCs – City Repair Units now display their conversation idles properly however there is no sound in order to conserve space.

[ ] Cenoba – True to Argonian form they now display their proper Argonian names. You’ll notice Arthmoor’s name has been properly updated. Map marker is now displayed so people know where it’s at but you cannot fast travel there at the start. Curkata’s fish barrels no longer respawn so feel free to stuff them with more fish. Or whatever.  Furthermore, you can do a safe soul gem storage inside the Magic Shoppe

[ ] Indary Manor – Now has Indary Mine. Berkshire has been moved near Kynesgrove and if you notice a landmark in that area you’ll find the Hidden Cave. 

[ ] Berkshire Castle – Has been moved near Kynesgrove (Interesting Landmark). Updated displays. Because of the enormity of Berkshire there is still the teleportation spell you can find inside the main bedroom there. There is a new set table function in the main dining hall (silver dishes) and children’s rooms have been updated. 

[ ] Ravenwood Manor – now has a proper kitchen for doing the dishes and cooking. The main bedroom has been accommodated so there’s a proper family room. 

[ ] Whispering Pines – has a proper kitchen, mudroom and the main bedroom has been moved upstairs. 

[ ] Lyngwi Cottage – I don’t know how I manage to make cosy cottages hold so much stuff, but I noticed people don’t have an issue lugging an entire Orcish Armoury in their backpack so I won’t be so fussed about it. Have fun in your Nordic Druid Cottage with all the trappings of a mansion

I appreciate the input from Matt, Mist and Chris about crime sprees and what would be a good counterfeit pardon edict amount. I actually cried when I killed Alvor to test out the first inceptions of this. Many many many thanks to Doc, DZ and Chris for the tireless testing and putting up with some of my lowest moments when I thought I couldn’t get in all the unique features I wanted. Thank you Nix for the added testing and tidy notes. Thank you Ty, for the support with charity drives as I kept pushing into the wee hours with these mods.

There are times when throwing a mod out the window is easier than pushing forward but because of the support of you and people like these, I was able to shine through once again.I truly hope that my Goonies everywhere enjoy these updates. I had a fun and frustrating time putting it together.
