Dark Ages Texture Overhaul

This mod seeks to create a new visual experience, adding a somewhat darker, distinctively different atmosphere across the province of Skyrim. Dark Ages is a comprehensive mesh and texture project covering the game’s Architecture – cities and villages -, Landscapes, Mountains, Snow and Dungeons, achieving its unique look through careful blending of high quality textures as well as the introduction of my own texture recreations. This texture combination brings about a fresh, logical and lore-friendly feel to the game, and it is the culmination of my efforts to offer a different way of seeing Skyrim.

Dark Ages Main – Architecture

This module is an extensive overhaul to stone and woodwork to all of Skyrim cities and villages. My goal was to create a new way of looking at Skyrim with darker roofs and wood staining instead of paint and more ornate wood carvings. These aesthetics were built on the principle that paint is a rare commodity, usually reserved for nobles or fighting forces – not for giant swaths of buildings. As an example illustrating this vision, Whiterun has undergone a new transformation, with blueish undertones to the main pieces and darker wood stains, hinting on the use of resin and oils. Additionally, all windows have been fixed and appropriately cleaned.

Dark Ages SMIM and Furnishings Addon

Main| ArchitectureSMIM Addon | Landscapes | Mountains and Snow | Traditional Dungeons| Fantasy Dungeons | Compatibility | Credits | Extras

Not only do you get SMIM meshes, but also SMIM textures along with RaiserFX’s improved rugs and flooring as well as other items to enhance your game. Each texture was carefully thought out to give a cohesive feel to the overall tone Dark Ages brings, but also adds distinct flare to location specific items (such as ruins or certain signs). Basically they’re awesome.

This replaces DSMIM if you have it and want to use Dark Ages main architecture pack. If you are using any of the other addons, then DSMIM is fine . Why? The main pack contains architecture pieces from SMIM and also my own handiwork. The DSMIM modules has architecture + clutter and furnishings so it would be redundant to use another mod that has the exact same meshes.

Dark Ages Landscapes

Main| ArchitectureSMIM Addon | Landscapes | Mountains and Snow | Traditional Dungeons| Fantasy Dungeons | Compatibility | Credits | Extras

I wanted to find a unique way to express a more northern environment. My intention was to create a texture pack that reflected richer grasses due to more rainy seasons, rich tundra oranges, darker dirt cliffs for the extra moisture in the air, dirts that had rocks and other bits to make sense for the people traveling them, and roads that look worn but well constructed.

Landscapes does not cover mountains or snow so you can pick your favourite pack to go alongside it. I also suggest Refracting ice for the glaciers.

Dark Ages Mountains and Snow

Main| ArchitectureSMIM Addon | Landscapes | Mountains and Snow | Traditional Dungeons| Fantasy Dungeons | Compatibility | Credits | Extras

I love fantasy elements in a fantasy game. These mountains feature a unique geological designed that features interesting edges and visual style. I’ve always had a fond spot for CC’s textures because they’re always so terribly unique and whimsical and it showcases Tamriel with its own unique geological formation. I was very excited for him to grant me the permissions to use his mountains for this mod. I hope you enjoy a dash of whismy and fantasy as much as I have. Also included are rock and mountain mesh adjustments.

I also did my own version of snow. I personally don’t mind vanilla snow, but I thought I’d enhance it just a wee bit by attempting to make it fluffier with a deeper normal map and adding some sparkle to it.

Mountains – Mountain Slab 01 and 02, plus the Hearthfires quarry stone

Snow – includes paths and walks and grasses that are also touched by snow.

Dark Ages Traditional Dungeons

Dungeons are a particular addon because most users run interior lighting mods that render most textures unnoticeable. While forts belong in the dungeon section, many have constructs outside, not only making these textures more noticeable than the interior ones, but also blending with the rest of the landscape. For this reason, those users who prefer not to retexture their interior dungeons, I have decided to offer Forts as a standalone pack as well as including them in this Dungeon overhaul.

Dark Ages Fantasy Dungeons

The goal of this was to create a more fantasy rich interior using CC’s amazing textures for mines and caves rocks/walls to match the mountain addon. The other parts are the same as the traditional dungeons. The reason for the size difference is that the tradition dungeons rely on special alpha layers for some of the textures while Fantasy does not, and alpha layers on textures are larger files.

Dark Ages Compatibility

Main| ArchitectureSMIM Addon | Landscapes | Mountains and Snow | Traditional Dungeons| Fantasy Dungeons | Compatibility | Credits | Extras

The goal of Dark Ages was to include the major architecture and clutter items we see everywhere without causing major overlap with other mods. We know that the X model has had some serious issues with performance and the “4K” update. Please read carefully.

Dark Ages Info

Main| ArchitectureSMIM Addon | Landscapes | Mountains and Snow | Traditional Dungeons| Fantasy Dungeons | Compatibility | Credits | Extras

As you know we are limited by space on the console. I have poured my heart and precious time into creating a comprehensive texture overhaul that shouldn’t break too much of your allotted space. There are always going to be minor issues in the game. You do not need to report to me every minor detail. Do yourself the biggest favour and relax and enjoy the game rather than worrying about if Bethesda did something funky to the world that we mod authors are always trying to mend.
